The Giessen Center for Eastern European Studies (GiZo)

Master’s Degree Program: Interdisciplinary Studies on Eastern Europe

The Giessen Center for Eastern European Studies (GiZo) is the regional-studies research and teaching center for Eastern Europe at the Justus-Liebig-University in Giessen.

Taking the term “Eastern Europe” to include Turkey and the Turkic-speaking regions of the former Soviet Union as well as Eastern Central, South-Eastern and Eastern Europe the GiZo aims to describe, analyze and evaluate Eastern Europe within the context of Europe as a whole.

We would like to take this opportunity to inform you about our Master‘s program, ‘Interdisciplinary Studies on Eastern Europe’. This program expands the comprehensive range of programs already on offer at the GiZo, and aims to develop students who can professionally analyse, reflect upon and evaluate societal, political, legal, economic and cultural developments in Eastern Europe with interdisciplinary expertise and knowledge.

The program of study includes :

  • 120 credit points accumulated over two academic years
  • a major in either Slavic Studies or History of Eastern Europe
  • a minor in two of the following: Slavic Studies, Turkic Studies, History of Eastern Europe, Law, Political Studies or Economics
  • an interdisciplinary Master’s thesis

Double degree programme in European Studies 2011/12

(Kaliningrad/Wuppertal)

Till July 31, graduates from all disciplines worldwide can apply for the postgraduate programme in European Studies, term 2011/201 2, organised by the Kaliningrad European Institute Klaus Mehnert (EIKM). The course is currently the only in Russia study programme in European Studies in German language and offers its graduate s two degrees in one year: a Russian diploma and a German Master of Arts.

The one-year curriculum offers in the first semester modules such like European Policies, European Right, European Economy, European Culture and Russian-European relationships, as well as language courses either in Russian, French or English.

In the second semester students have the choice between an internship and a study at Wuppertal University in frame of their Master's programme in European Studies. Upon successful completion of the course in Wuppertal, these students will receive a Russian Diploma and a German Master of Arts (M.A.).The best graduates from each year receive the Willy Brandt Award of the Socialist Group in the European Parliament and complete a one-month internship in Brussels and Strasbourg.

The study year in Kaliningrad starts 19th of September, 2011.

Applications for the academic year 2011/12 can be submitted till July 31, 2011. Qualifications for the application are a successful completion of a higher education (at least 4 years) and good German language skills.

New!!! LL.M. in “International Dispute Resolution” at the Europa-Institut at Saarland University, Germany

Since its establishment in 1980, the postgraduate program (“Master of Laws”) at the Europa-Institut of Saarland University has become one of the most successful masters programs in Germany and Europe. The Europa-Institut of Saarland University has been the starting point for many outstanding careers in the field of European and international law. Based on this experience and on the successful introduction of international arbitration courses in recent years, the Europa-Institut of Saarland University will introduce a new study unit “International Dispute Resolution” in the academic year 2011-12.

The IDR masters program, as a special study unit, aims at providing post graduates, advanced students, and young practitioners with the specific knowledge on international commercial arbitration, international investment arbitration and alternative dispute resolution. The program focuses on the discovery of an efficient and fair dispute resolution in a transnational context in a world where commercial courts are national institutions.

The IDR masters program shall be of particular interest to those students aiming at a career in international law firms, arbitral institutions, or in-house legal departments of international organizations or corporations.
