• Applicants interested in a study programme taught in English should also present a DAAD language certificate indicating their present level of achieved proficiency in German. The DAAD will then support them in taking German courses designed for their needs once they have been granted a scholarship for study in Germany
• A DAAD language certificate is not required when a copy of one of the following certificates is submitted: PNdS, DSH, ZOP, GDS, KDS, DSD II, Test DaF
• Proof of English language skills for English-instructed programmes or research stays is provided by submitting a TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge ESOL certificate or a language certificate form completed by a teacher of English at the university and with details of the applicant's English language skills
• PLEASE NOTE: Applicants who, at the time of their application, have been resident in Germany for more than one year cannot be considered
• Copies of originals of diplomas (secondary school leaving certificate, BA, MA etc.) need NOT be officially certified
• Translations of diplomas must be certified by university, school or by a certified translator
• All application papers must be submitted unbound, printed on one side only and in DIN A4-format. They may be submitted in English or German. All application forms can be obtained at www.daad.de/en/form

Application deadline for all programmes: 15th November each year
unless another deadline is mentioned in the programme. The applications must be submitted personally or by mail to the respective address for your country.

Guidelines for referees

There are Research Grants for doctoral students and young academics and scientists, Study Scholarships for Graduates of all disciplines and Course Completion grants for students reading German Studies.

Please note that references/letters of recommendation will only be recognised from university teachers holding a doctorate. (Exception: Universities which do not have university teachers holding a doctorate in the department in question)

• Please write your reference in German or English
• Please enter your full name (in block capitals), your academic position and your institution (with place and country) and the name of the applicant about whom you are writing your reference
• Please use the DAAD-Form “Reports on scholarship applications submitted by foreign students, graduates, doctoral students and postdocs” or the official, headed paper of your institution
• Please sign and date your reference and stamp it with the institution's official stamp.
• Please hand the reference to the applicant in a sealed envelope.

Important questions which your reference should address include:

• Since when you have you known the applicant?
• In what capacity did you get did you get to know the applicant?
• Have you personally worked with the applicant for any longer period of time and/or do you know the applicant from other areas?
• How would you assess the academic achievements respectively the research performance (examination results, production of independent academic/research papers, publications, etc.)?
• How would you assess the applicant's academic development and potential?
• How would you assess the scientific quality of the project, the status of the preparations, the feasibility and, possibly, the requested time frame?
• How would you assess the applicant’s overall character, strengths and weaknesses?
• Please provide any appropriate additional information which could be important for the decision by the selection committee.
